Most dentists recommend using a fluoride toothpaste containing up to 0.5% fluoride. But there is some dispute over whether that is the best choice. There is an old saying in medicine that if you want to live long, eat right, exercise, and stay healthy, you should also stop smoking. Most experts agree that a diet with the recommended amount of protein and fiber will help maintain teeth that have fallen out of their natural alignment. But there is disagreement as to whether that would help the teeth stay healthy. Dr. Joseph M. Mercola, DDS, CCC, FAAN, author of " Dangers of Dietary Fattening Foods ", and his colleague, Dr. Harold R. McIver, MD, the director of the Center for Oral Health, at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry, both believe that there are "no clear indications" that eating too much protein and fiber will lead to the restoration of missing teeth. They wrote in a commentary, "We need to be careful not to jump to a conclusion that 'a diet high in protein and fiber' can reverse dental decay and improve dental health. The evidence is weak at best and has a lot of limitations. There is no clear indication that the diet we advocate will have a measurable effect on the rate of tooth decay in the general population." In the past, it was popular for the media to promote protein as an important dietary component in tooth restoration.
